1992 245 auto trans stuck in drive .... 200 1992

Well, had another new and fun event in the 92 wagon, shifted the car into drive, felt really easy, like no resistance at all, and that where it stays, permanant D position, the neutral safety switch still works in the proper positions and the reverse lights come on in R but no transmission change. I haven't had a chance to crawl under it yet, anyone have this before? I've never had a shifter do this before. I'm guessing the linkage just came apart, at least I hope that's all it is. Not an internal transmission problem I hope.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
