couple questions before putting my struts back together 200 1992

Hi,
I just received my new strut mounts and am getting ready to put the front end back together. I had 2 questions that I wasn't able to find anything on in the archives. I am hoping to finish this up soon so all help is greatly appreciated.

1. When i pulled out the old strut inserts, i noticed the bottom of the insert was liberally coated in grease. I am guessing this is to lubricate it against the bottom of the strut tower? Is it recommened I grease up the bottom of the new strut inserts? If so, is regular bearing grease sufficient?

2. When i pulled off the old strut mounts and look at the underside of the fender where they used to sit, it looks like there was some sort of yellowish adhesive between the strut mount and fender. What is this residue and is it ok to just put the new one in there without anything else?
