how important are transmission mounts?

Well, if you need a new transmission mount (there's ONE, BTW) the part is $13 from FCP, similarly reasonable everywhere else. Except the dealer of course.

Changing it is a simple procedure: undo the bolt that holds the mount to the tranny, support the tranny with a jack, and unbolt the crossmember from the car. Once that's out, replace the mount. Then put it back together.

Probably a less than one hour job for you, much less than that for an experienced mechanic with a well-equipped shop.

IF they are getting the part from a dealer and charging you an hour's labor, I guess $150 is not totally insane; if the mount is shot and you can't do it yourself AND if this is a shop you totally trust then bite the bullet. A worn transmission mount can allow bad driveline vibrations and accelerate wear on your engine mounts, wait and see how much they charge you to change THOSE.

Or get a little greasy and be done for 1/10 of that...
