camshaft carrier oil leak 900 1992

Your oil leak is most likely from a failed end seal on one of the cam shafts, you do not want to break into the head top unless the glue/sealant has been disturbed by some past engine work, the head top holds the cams in place, once cracked open then you will spend a lot of time cleaning the old glue/sealant off and degreasing for an oil free surface. Not a job the faint of heart. Plus then retiming the cams, special tools make the job quicker and easier, but not required. There is also an o-ring at each spark hole.

Clean your engine and make sure you know the source of the oil, it can migrate from just about anywhere. Most likely the exhaust cam seal is at fault and have found on my car, the rear to be the most bothersome. Buy original OEM Volvo seals, they seem to last the longest.

Another source of an oil leak that I have experienced, the oil filler gasket, that dries out, gets hard and lets oil past especially if the engine is a little tired and there is some blow by, my initial thought, because the oil collected on the exhaust side was the glue/sealant or a head gasket, a little detective work and a hope that it would be something easy found that gasket was responsible.
