Ignition controler advancing too much? 200 1983

My 1983 245 has developed an ignition knock over the last 10,000 miles. I have the Chrysler white cap ignition. It started to knock slightly under light load with regular fuel and I started using premium fuel and it stopped the knock. Lately, the knock has returned and retarding the inital timing helps but performance is greatly reduced. I have the timing adjusted to about 9 degrees. The engine does not have excessive compression - it is slightly low compression at 230,000 miles.

I suspect the ignition controller is failing and advancing the timing too much for conditions. When checking the timing and increasing the engine speed to an estimated 1500 to 2000 RPM, the timing advances quickly to 30 to 40 degrees. This seems excessive. Can someone compare to their similar car?

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I have replaced the ignition controller in the past because of timing advance problems. Anyone ever repair these controlers?
