Is it worth it to rebuild the engine? 700 1987

Hey everybody,

1987 760 Turbo+, 208 000 miles.

I went on a trip out of state, leaving my car with my family, and when I came back, my car had started making a pretty hideous scraping noise at around 3000 RPM. Not sure what the noise is, but I'm pretty sure it's from inside the engine. She's had oil leaks for the last year or so, and I imagine somebody in my family drove my car without oil in it in the two weeks that I was gone.

The sound has gotten worse in recent days (I don't drive it too often, either). If it's as bad as it sounds, I doubt the engine is going to last much longer, and I don't want to be left stranded.

So, my question is this: I'm getting tired of the expense and time required to keep my poor old Volvo on the road. Now, I love the car, and would love to keep it, but IF I kept it, I'd want to

  • Rebuild/replace the engine and turbo, making sure by the time I'm finished that there are no oil leaks or other mechanical issues;

  • Replace the A/C unit;

  • Probably replace the wiring harness and fuse holder, as I'm having the random electrical issues associated with a faulty harness;

  • Get some front end work done--bushing replacements, etc.

  • It may need some minor transmission work--it's got the hard shifting issues mentioned in the FAQ;

  • (Optional) Repair some interior issues as well, like replacing power seat motors, diagnosing and repairing seat heater issues, etc. Lots of small problems that have been bugging me for awhile.

Basically, I want to stop repairing this car and start maintaining it. By my (rough) estimate, if I were to do all that work myself (except for the front end work), it would cost me under $2000 and a few weeks without my car. That's less than a newer car would cost me. I also think it would be a fun project.

What do you think, brickboard? Is it worth salvaging my classic 760 or should I give up on her and look at a later model 740/940 (that's the other option I've given myself, anyway)?

Any and all feedback appreciated. I'll miss my Volvo sorely if I must get rid of her, but I'd like to hear what more experienced Volvo people think before I do something so drastic.
