new window & headliner in a 244 200

This is a project that's been marinating for a while.

The below pictures will give you a basic idea on what is involved when you replace the front window (to a newer style) and recover the headliner in a 240 sedan.

Window removed is the only way to get the headliner out of a 244.

Quite a few pictures did not come out great. So, I posted the good pics & will summarize the process by weeks end.

Find some fabric. You see how I am rolling. Has to be the proper weight. Not so thin that the glue (3M Super 77) will penetrate the fabric. Not too thick that it will not bend, fold, and cut how you like. Plus, heavy upolstry fabric is not for headliners. You'll know what works when you feel it in your hands. This piece was $30 at my local fabric shop.

Review mirror. Grab it & give a good tug towards you. Comes right out. Fits like a ball and socket. Goes back together just as easy. Note my poor mans GPS set up :-)

This is the plate that mounts the rear view mirror. Remove the screws. The plate not only holds the mirror but acts like a washer to hold up the headliner.

Here are the pilar moldings. Remove the edging around the door to get to the trim piece. There is a plastic clip (of sorts) behind the molding -inserted into the metal pilar. To remove the molding you need to loosen it, get your fingers behind it, and move it down & out. There is a "u" groove on back of the molding that holds the "fastener". This window was replaced by crack heads. How do I know? The worst butyl tape job EVER & broken "clips" (which really look like the round fasteners on the door panels) on both sides. No biggie. The flexible edging around the door opening holds them in place. I'll score new ones from someone -hint, hint.

Pretty obvious stuff. Visors need to come down. Those handles for high speed manuvering and cornering must come off. The fasteners at the rear of the headliner must come out by removing 3 plugs. Dome light prys out. Have a good set of mechanics picks on hand. Wally World has a cheap set of Stanleys that served my purpose. Bent them to $hit but they were less than $3. All these thing help hold the headliner in place.

A 5 in 1 painters tool works really good for trim & door panel work.

I did a great job breaking the trim piece at the very front of the headliner -where window meets headliner. This particular piece was fused by "leaky", old, sagging butyl (the black goo that seals your old window, new style is urethane caulk). This piece is held in place by a few clips. I tried my best but no saving that piece of Volvo plastic. A new one must be in my future -hint, hint.

Wipers off. 13mm nut. Broke the covers too. Shitty Volvo plastic! Can I get a witness? Just call me Mr. Pimp Hand aka Plastic Bustin Fool.

Window clips. These hold the trim to the old style window. New style glass has trim "fused" to the window. You'll DEFINITELY need a pick of some sort since they "cup" the edge of the window. Pliars work good too. There are quite a few.

I was savage about removing the trim around the front window. No flipping this crap on Flee Bay :-)

This will be done in a day or two. I'll post back with more pics on how to complete the task.
