Transmission filter care 200 1991

What is your take on A/T filter care. Clean or replace? I was at the stealership and was surprised to hear the parts man telling me to remove the filter and flush it out rather than replacing it. Is this true?
Being the steel grate style do i even have to yank it out or can I just replace the fluid w/o tampering with the filter??
More questions. Why does Vlvworld.com want $88.57 and FCP want $8.00 for the filter kit? What type of fluid do you reccomend? Is there a higher quality out there?
My car turned 400k and it desereves the best.
