Buying a Volvo 200

Hey all,

I'm new so go easy. I'm currently in the market to buy a used Volvo. My preference is to get an early 80's stick 240 wagon. I've found a few locally (Portland) in my price range (400-700) but nothing has been concrete yet.

I found one recently that to me seems like a decent one. It's a 1981 manual Wagon, with around 280K on it, and the asking price is about 500 or so. Other than normal wear and tear (which isn't that big of a deal to me) the main issue the owner has is that he says the "fuel distributor" needs to be replaced. It doesn't run currently, and I'm not to wild about getting another car towed to my house that I just bought (only to have to sell it). I know that I could just wait a little longer to get one thats better (as I'm now past the point of "needing" one right now). But it depends on the cost of the part, and how low he's willing to go in price.

He says that the part is relatively cheap to purchase used (30-50 bucks or so).

Now my questions are these.

Does that sound like a big deal? I know old Chevys really well, so I know whats easy or not easy on those. My friend who knows Volvos isn't too sure about it and suggested I stop asking him and ask here.

Is it easy to replace the fuel distributor on them? Something someone can do on their own? Does it sound fishy to get rid of a car for a 30-50 dollar part?

I've rebuilt a carb for my old Chevy truck I used to have and restored an old Evinrude boat motor, so I'm mechanical enough to fix a fair amount.

If it is relatively easy/cheap to get and replace, what could be a decent offer to make for the car? If it's not easy to fix/not cheap I'm not going to bother.

thanks

dan
