Thanks for the help. The charging circuit has always been a mystery to me. ;)

I found, through another forum, a key to the replacement VR. The green wire is the field, the red is the D+/61, and the brown is the D-. So I connected the brown/yellows to the red, the green to the green, and the brown to the D- post on the alternator. I started it up, and the alt light went out; I measured about 14 volts across the battery terminals. Sound right?
