Lock Operation 200 1992

How are the locks supposed to work on the 1992 series 240's? I have a GL and my son has a DL and they both work this way:

Unlock driver side with key and then open door and pull up lock on driver side to open rest of doors.

When locking doors push down driver side lock to lock all doors(driver side lock does not "go down" to it's locked position, but allows you to lock other doors) and then use key to lock driver door.

If the car is running then the driver side lock can be pushed all the way down or lifted up to control all of the door locks.

This involves alot of extra steps and is not as simple as locking and unlocking my 83 & 85
