signs of impending alternator or Voltage regulator failure??? 700 1990

Battery 1.5 yrs old(Kirkland guaranteed 6 yrs).Voltmeter in dashboard reads 12.5-13.25 with daytime running headlights low beam.Less with air cond on.
It used to be 14 on highway.now never over 13.25V
Digital voltmeter attached to battery terminal reads 13.8 V with daytime running lights at idle and does not goes up with revving to 3000 rpm.Used to be 13.95 to 14V

Alternator 17 yrs old.
Aftermarket Monarch VR 3 yrs old.
How to tell whether it's the VR that is dying or the alternator.
Other than the voltmeter (dashboard)reading, car starts fine,no problem.
I have a resoldered(2 prongs) Bosch VR for emergency ,I can try to put that on and see whether the charging voltage will increase
