Need help STAT! 1983 240 idles poorly and is surging. 200 1983

Hi all,
this morning I got in my 1983 240DL and did some errands and the car seemed to run fine. This afternoon, I got in it and went to the store for a few items. When I got back in the car from the store, I started it and the smooth idle it had is gone and it now surges. The surge isn't bad, but it is having trouble keeping a weak idle with all the surges. It is almost like it is having trouble breathing or not getting enough fuel. I checked the fuel pump while the car was running and it seems to be running smoothly. I have not checked the air filter, but any help is much needed since I need to be at work in two hours! TIA!!
