Ignition Amplifier?? 1989

OK, this is my first post here. I found this site while trying to surf to figure out why our Volvo just decided it didn't want to run. We have an '89 DL wagon. Here is the scenario:

Husband went out to start the car Tuesday morning and the starter did not engage the motor so he takes it out and has it tested - it tested to be fine. Puts the starter back in and the engine fires right up. So my daughter leaves to go to the grocery store and the car just dies. No spitting. No sputtering. Then when she cranks it over it kicks and spits and backfires but it does not start again. So hubby has a friend tow it home. Went thru it with a fine-tooth comb. Tested the coil - good. Tested the inline fuse - good. Checked and changed fuse #11. Distributor was dry. Then I read in the book about an ignition amplifier so I test #2 and #4 and both are giving out volts so according to the manual the wiring is good. Then I take the amplifier off and test #5 on the plug (not the amplifier itself) and get volts <2 but >0 (it was .something or other) so according to the book it passed the test meaning it is NOT the ECU and to replace the amplifier.

I have done searches at Autozone and Parts Plus and of course came up with nothing. Are there any suggestions where I can find this amplifier and are there passibly any ideas on what else it might be?? Thanks!

Crystal
