740 hard start, sputters, then evens out if it starts 700 1989

My 740 non-turbo wagon is very hard to start. Holding the key in start position it's almost like the engine is dieseling. If I manage to get the car running it runs as though on 2 cylinders for about 30 seconds, and then it will even out and run on all 4. Car had a problem with the ECT sensor and sat for a while. Car was flooded out many times before ECT was diagnosed. If O2 sensor is bad, which I'm told it must be having been flooded several times, would that cause the difficult starting that evens out once the engine starts? Sometimes I can't get it running at all. A couple times engine did actually diesel for a few seconds when key went from start to run position. If not the O2 sensor, any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott
