1993 240 A/C electric fan- when does it run? 200

Just got done replacing the spark plugs on my 1993 240 this morning. I saw the electric fan that sits in front of the A/C condenser and, since I'd never seen if it ran or not decided to try it. I started the engine, started up the A/C with the blower fan on (not that it matters), and saw... nothing. I did however feel the cool air come out of the vents and heard the compressor cycling. I thought I had read somewhere that this was supposed to run whenever the A/C is on. Bentley has nothing to say on this. Anyone know when this fan is supposed to run?
