Timing 1800

I bought my 69 164 in 1971, and at that time the manual said initial advance
should be 21-24°. I've been running it at about that ever since and have
actually damaged more valves than pistons or rings. I attribute the valve
damage to insufficient clearance (0.018") which reduced seat pressure on hot
valves due to thermal expansion of the stems. 0.020" valve lash seems to have
eliminated that problem. I have never seen a broken ring in any of the 4 B30s
I have had, in fact the only rings I have seen broken in a B20 were related to
desert operation without an aircleaner. There was also substantial piston
damage in that engine, as those who read my post several years ago may recall.
