timing belt question 900 1994

Just did a timing belt job on my 940 NA among a lot of other things. Car runs fine but I wanted to know what the free wheeling sprocket is above the crank. Is this for smooth belt transition? Why does it have a timing dot on it? It didn't seem to matter what position it was in. Thanks Larry
