Hard start after initial cold start 200 1989

My car starts flawlessly on the first try.

That being said, on certain days, the car sometimes conks out three minutes after starting and it is very, very difficult to start again.

It normally happens when there is a sizable change in temperature or humidity between the time the car is last driven and the time the car is restarted.

What happens is the car bubbles to a stop, then it takes two or three cranks of the ignition with the pedal down, then the car catches, I have to step off the gas then on it again, on which the fan belt squeaks a bit, then the car runs good again.

I understand the car runs differently on the first start (dead rich?) and a few minutes later, the car is switched to a "normal" mode -- either the fuel pump relay, O2 sensor, or air mass meter is responsible for this, if I recall correctly.

Suggestions?
