Installing an A/C expansion valve 88 245 200

Can someone describe for me the process of removing/replacing the A/C expansion valve on my 88 245. I suspect it is the cause of my R12 leak because there appears to be compressor oil on it and a spot on the passenger footwell below it. It was slow to loose freon but I feel badly for contributing to global warming.

-After I replace the expansion valve [I see Groton sells one for about $24], is it mandatory to evacuate the system before replacing the refrigerant?

-Should I replace receiver/drier? System has been inoperative for over a year and I assume where freon can leak out moisture can get in.

-I am thinking of going with Freeze 12. Is this something [evacuate system etc.]a DIYer can do without special equipment?
