'91 240 Wagon Speedometer not working after work on instrument cluster 1991

We are having a problem with our '91 240 wagon, we had to remove the instrument cluster to replace a broken trip odometer button, now the speedometer is not working. The other instruments are fine. We replaced all the wires except a red and white wire. On the back of the instrument cluster, there is a dual pronged spot, but when we plugged the red/white wire into it, the car ran funny and it starting smoking. Do we have the wrong wire? The other wires are all plugged in and everything besides the speedometer are working fine. Need advice!
