fuel pump relay question 140-160

i don't have a ground on the coil of the fuel pump relay on my '73 144 FI...why would this be?...is the relay switched by the ground?...if i ground the relay out to the battery it clicks and the car runs (barely, but thats another story)

the car has been sitting for two years...it was my daily driver ~4 years ago...i would like for it to be again...the fuel pump is the first issue in getting it to even run...next i'll be trying to get it to run "well"

thanks
james
