Decided to go for the alternator, and all is well. After some issues getting the bracket mounted (sheered a bolt trying to use the originals) I started her up and the little red bane of my existance extinguished in about 2 seconds. Plus my headlights are MUCH brighter. Thanks everyone (especially Ron) for helping out. Still don't know what the problem was, but this certainly solved it (bad rebuilt generator is my guess).
