If it goes into 4th, it's moving that 3rd/4th selector fork back and forth. Something is just preventing it from sliding back into 3rd.

I'd have to agree, not much good you can do without taking it out and looking inside other than try shifting it back and forth a few times to see if something will wiggle loose. (And if it does, nervously draining the oil to see what comes out).
