Clutch / Clutch Cable Adjustment ......... 200 1986

When clutch pedal is let up fully all is fine . However if i just slightly depress pedal while driving in gear clutch loosens up and starts slipping. I am talking very slightly. So I slightly adjusted the clutch cable by loosening it but now i have to depress clutch pedal all the way to floor and even then push it down hard for clutch to work to be able to change gears. So I will go back to original adjustment setting. My question is : is this very limited range of adjustment normal ?? Clutch is maybe only 2x years old and cable is maybe a year old. I would like to be able to depress pedal not quite to floor to change gears and on the other hand don't want clutch to disengage/start slipping until pedal is maybe a 1/3 to 1/2 way depressed. Thanks in advance for replies.
