So the problem where you had to give Inga gas to keep her running at red lights and idle (at least until she warmed up) was the cat converter. Happened suddenly two days ago during the AM drive to work and was intermittent the next day or so. Actually had ran fine yesterday, but knew something was wrong.
Oh Yeah - 1986 245DL 213K, Automatic AKA Inga (21 year old Swede with big plastic headlights).
Had a muffler shop install a new cat this morning and what a difference. The idle is has dropped at least 100 to maybe even 150 rpm to like 700 or just a little less, was up around 850 rpm before. May have to increase it just a little. Guess there was a back pressure building up in the exhaust (that was a rocket science observation). She passed Emissions (just barely) less than a month ago. NOX was only 20 points under max at the high rpm part of the test. There were close to max readings on all the NOX tests. The inside of the converter was rattling around when you shook it. Hoping to see milage increase, at least a small increase some. She averages 25 mpg on the daily drive right now.
So my piston slappin lil kitten is, knock on wood running as smooth as ever (right now).
Now back to getting that R12 back in the R134 conversion, it's hot out there.
Regards,
PT
