RATTLING EXHAST PIPE??? 900 1992

1992 960 Wagon

I noticed a rattle coming from the center of the car last week. It sounded like a heat shield or broken hanger, but upon closer inspection, the rattle appeared to be coming from INSIDE the pipe just behind the catalytic converter. I grabbed the pipe and it is solid and does not swing or appear to be loose anywhere. When I grabbed the pipe with a leather glove, the noise was dampened substantially, but did not go away.

Any ideas? The noise is annoying! and I am concerned something may be really wrong.

Fuel mileage is only 18-19 mpg, overall. I drive half hwy and half city.
Acceleration is strong. Changed plugs 2 weeks ago; cyl 2 & 6 had oil on the threads and ceramic was stained(leaking), yet oil consumption is very low. NOTE: Coolant tank took 2 cups of fluid last weekend and 1 more this week...no sign of leaks...motor oil is clean...trans fluid is clean.

Thanks,
Most Unusual
