Throttle position sensor- B230F 700

1989 740 GL Sedan- good car, but......won't run-
How is the throttle position sensor adjusted?
the car starts but won't idle. all relays check out.
it wants to run, but just won't catch, and it seems that there is some little thing keeping the engine from idling the way it should.
I cleaned the throttle body- and the IAC- it works too-
also the engine runs very rich - is this common? it has heavy carbon build up.
I'm concerned that there may be other damage done by continually trying to start the engine!!
