Fuel Pump Noise 700

Wife's '90 745T has main fuel pump making lots of noise. I replaced it at 140k and the car now has 251k+ on it. I just replaced the fuel pressure regulator for the 2nd time and that didn't help. How long do main fuel pumps last? What about the pump in the tank? I've never done that one so it's probably original. Does the tank have to come out like it says in the Chilton manual or can I wiggle the sender around to get it out? The car has few if any symptoms other than a loud fuel pump - for now. If the in-tank pump is bad I suspect I'm slowly killing the main pump and will soon be looking at replacing both pumps- any thoughts?
