Help! My hood release cable handle came off in my hand 200 1986

I went to look under the hood a little while ago and when I pulled the white handle, it was a little tighter to pull than usual. I pulled a little harder and the long white handle unit came off in my hand. I can see the end of the cable with the little part that fits into the end of the handle, but there doesn't seem to be a way of getting a grip on it enough to pull on it. I recall a couple of years ago of some posts on how to get to the release mechanism and get the hood opened. Someone, please pass along some good hints.

Thanks.
