hooking up a/c gauges 200

Gentlemen,

feel like this is a stooopid question but rather than make a mess or create drama i prefer to defer to those more knowledgable.

while i have good experience working on, & bring back, defunct a/c systems, i've never tried to hook up gauges to a "charged" system.

in order to check my pressures & test my new, to me, gauges, i started with the high side hose.

as i got the connector on, & in the process of tightening it down, $hit started coming out the back of the compressor.

normal? am i supposed to wear gloves?

can someone please explain how to hook up a set of gauges to a charged system, what to expect when i do so, and how to check the high & low pressures?

i understand a/c systems, the numbers i'm looking for, which port is which, and all that. just a little clarification.

THANKS.
