Re-wiring hazard lights - Probabaly a Question for Ron Kwas 120-130

When I became the second owner of a 1967 P220 (122S Wagon), I noticed that there were no hazards. Then I found a switch down on the driver's kickpanel, but the switch did nothing. Then I discovered that they *did* work, but only when the signal lights were turned on (i.e. left or right turn switch engaged) but they were pretty anemic. A new flasher relay helped a bit, but these were never very good.

I found an 1800E parts car a while back and saved the hazard light switch for an eventual upgrade when I had the chance to install a new dashboard. Well, I'm now replacing the dashboard and installing the 1800E style hazard switch. The sw-em article on doing this is plenty detailed and instructive, but I've found something odd that I wanted to inquire about.

I was removing the "original" hazard switch and noticed that it had two sets of L/R wires that were spliced into the turn signal wires at two separate locations. One set was spliced into the wire branch where the the signal indicator light is located. The second pair of wires were spliced into the main harness signal wires. The branch that actually runs to the signal switch was not spliced.

I'm not sure why the "original" hazards were setup this way, but after I install the new switch, I'd like the the switch to activate the hazards and the indicator light to flash as well.

So, where on the harness should I splice in the new hazard switch wires so that they operate properly??? Also, what gauge of wire should I be using for the splice - 14 gauge?
