Brake pedal is very firm and not responsive, i.e. DANGEROUS 200 1988

While going on a 200 mile trip, about halfway through I pumped my brake three or four times very quickly and on the final push the pedal became very hard to push and my braking response dropped drmatically, I had to e-brake so I wouldn't get into a fender bender. If I don't use the brake for a minute or two it will brake fine on the first push but any pushes quickly proceeding get progressively harder. My brakes worked perfect before that quick pump I wish I never did, but I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and possibly a quick solution. Thanks
