Which Volvo wagon to shop for?

We (me and the missus) have a 1990 740 GLE wagon, with the 16 valve engine, (not a turbo) and we both like it. She drives it every day, but we take it on most longer trips, too.

There is the issue with the interference engine, so it's important to keep on top of the timing belt situation. If you find one you like, either verify when the last belt change was, or be prepared to do it right away.

The trade off for the potential for a valve/piston collision is the response you get when I punch it on the interstate on-ramp. I've had three b230f cars, and an older b21, and compared to the single cam engines, that 234 gets up and goes. Cruises at 80 all day. And that's with 175K on the odo.

There is the issue with the headliner - the cloth tends to separate from the backing and droop - but my wife fixed a minor droop with a few well placed straight pins, so it is manageable.

I'd buy it again, and a reasonably mileaged 1990-1991 can be found for under $2,000.
