Charging system problems....newbie needs help! 200 1986

It may be a simple as Worn out Brushes on the alternator.
Not sure if the lights will stay out with the bad brushes or bad regulator.
It might be a bad ground from the Alternator to Chassis. theer is a large wire that connects the body of teh alternator to the chassis. You may want to try literally holding a wire on the Case of the alternator and put it to teh negative side of teh battery and see if you start charging.

If you have around 150K - 200K miles on the car that would be the first place to look.

If you check the voltage on the battery and then start the car and check it again, does the voltage change at all?

It's easiest to take the entire Alternator out of the car to do this.
