Starter Go Bang 200 1987

I just replaced the starter in my '87 244. It works fine, but just at the point where the car starts and you let off the key, there is a fairly loud, fairly solid "bang" from somewhere on the driver's side. Hard to locate exactly, but it's anywhere from right behind the driver back to the rear left corner. Doesn't sound like it's near the starter.

This bang happens most of the time, but not always. No grinding or other obvious signs that the starter drive is mis-engaging or hanging up.

The car has had two previous starters, but it never did this before. Any ideas?
