Charging system problems....newbie needs help! 200 1986

The BB has to be the best forum for any vehicle I've ever encountered. Even though my information was inaccurate, Bruce was able to give you the missing pieces.

Besides that, my method requires a test light. Your idea of grounding the wire to see if the lights come on is a much better plan all the way around. Simple and to the point. The check can be done on the side of the road if necessary. It verifies everything up to the back of the alternator.
