Our beloved 1990 240 took quite a hit yesterday and thank God and Volvo that my wife is ok. She was stopped at a traffic light when a guy in a Ford F150 Pickup slammed into her from behind. She thinks he might have fallen asleep at the wheel because he kept on the gas even after the initial impact. She had to stand on the brakes to keep from being pushed out into the intersection.
The Front bumper and grille of the F150 was destroyed. The 240's rear bumper shattered in the center and pushed part of the trunk inward. Oddly enough, the plastic bumper cover is fine. The force also slightly buckled the right rear quarter panel as seen in the photo below. The right rear door just barely will close without rubbing at the bottom, and there is a slight bulge above the wheel well. The transmission shifter linkage was also bent, but all mounts are fine.
The repair estimate came in at $4750, so the insurance company will want to total it. The car only has 114K on it and was perfect before this happened. I am going buy it back and try to repair it myself. I figure all it really needs is a new bumper and crash absorbers, and a block of wood and a big hammer to beat the trunk back out. I probably can't do anything about the bulge over the wheel well.
Are there any areas of concern I should double check to make sure the car will still be safe if another collision should occur?
Thanks,
Preston
