oil light 200 1991

My oil light goes on when I stop at a light or go very slow. The car has 260,000 miles. It is not leaking oil and it does not need oil. My mechanic told me to change the oil I use from 10-30 to 20-50. This did not help. The oil light goes off when I drive at any speed above 10 miles. He said this happens with older cars. First, why does the oil light go on in these circumstances? and Second, what can I do to stop this?
Any info would be appreciated.
