Clutch fan woes! '87-745T 700

My thermostatic (clutch) fan would not engage at all so I bought one from Autozone in early May. It went into constant lockup for the last 2,000 mile trip. Mileage dropped pretty severely, maybe 2-3 mpg?

I tried to get my money back but they refused saying they will only replace the defective unit.

Tonight the second replacement is in lockup again (after 2 days). Yeah, it's hot in Memphis but I drove 4-5 miles with the AC off around 45 mph. Still roaring!

Used my temperature gun and the air temp behind the radiator is 150* or lower.

I think the brand is Torque-Flo, anyone have experience with this problem!
Ideas?
