I know the feeling wearing impermeable gloves in the heat of the summer. Instead of getting rubbed raw scrubbing the dirt out of them, they look shriveled and melted from playing in the surf too long. I use the blue ones, peel them off frequently, blow them back to right-side out once dried, and keep a chef's shaker of corn starch handy. I save the $20 gloves for the woodstove.
It is good of you to come back with the answer to the story. You'll save a lot of others with this info. Too often threads like these just fade away with no decent explanation.
The IAC doesn't need a ground. I doubt it is that sensitive to orientation either. In your 84 it is a motor that is twisted one way, then the other, at about 100 times a second. The air opening depends on the duty cycle, or dwell, of one twist compared to the one in the opposing direction. It should be thrumming if you put your hand around it while it is operating.
Thanks for complimenting the cleanup. The camera makes it look better than it actually is, but the practical use is catching oil leaks. That one continued to weep just above the knock sensor, a common head gasket leak, until I replaced the head gasket 65K later.
