K-Jet Fuel Pump Relay Fix 200 1982

Hello all... I'm now on my third K-Jet fuel pump relay on my '82 244. Fortunately, the nice folks at IPD replaced it under warranty for free, but after reading through the archives here, it seems that this relay is a known problem and is prone to failure.

On replacement, I noted that the connector showed signs of overheating, particularly near the yellow/red fuel pump power lines. Eek!!!

I will thoroughly check all connections and ground points for both fuel pumps, including amps drawn and voltage drops and all of that for good measure. But, what I think will really solve the problem once and for all is a more robust relay system for the fuel pumps.

Here's what I have in mind: I'll find myself a nice, sturdy 30 or 40 amp aftermarket relay. I'll run a fused 12 gauge wire from the main power terminal (the one on the left fender well) to this relay, which will then feed power to the pumps. The new relay will be triggered by the original fuel pump power connection on the stock relay.

This setup keeps the safety shut-off function that the stock relay offers, not to mention that it should extend the life of the stock relay by making its life easier (no more switching all that current), keeping it from burning out and stranding me (again).

Sound good? I'm going to give this a whirl later this week. Any opinions/advice appreciated.
