I am trying to trace a hesitation/knock on acceleration and hard cold starts (in the morning, one must crank for about 10-15 seconds before the engine finally fires, coughs and slowly gains speed for about 3-5 seconds before surging to about 1500rpm and then up and down a couple of times (takes maybe 5-10 seconds) before finally stabilizing at the specified 750rpm). Car runs excellent when warmed up except for hesitation/knock if you punch the throttle off idle.
I've done a lot of work to make the car run better, but in my tinkering I came across this worrying note concerning the ignition control unit in the Bentley book, p.280-8:
"CAUTION
Do not disconnect the harness connector from the control unit. The conector uses special one-way guide sleeves that are damaged when disconnected. If the harness connector is removed or the control unit is replaced, the wiring harness will need to be replaced."
That seems pretty drastic! I know that some of the pins on the Volvo/Chrysler unit have sleeves, but I really can't see how they would be damaged simply by unplugging the harness. I am concerned because the PO did swap the ICU when trying to chase down crappy running, and I am certain that he did not go get a new harness because of it. Is that really necessary? Is there any way to tell if said damage has actually occurred? If there was damage, couldn't one just replace the sleeves, or if worst came to worst, cut off the connector and solder/shrink wrap each wire to its corresponding pin on the ICU?
Am I crazy for thinking the Bentley is crazy here?
