740 windscreen washer pump repair 700 1990

The winscreen washer pump on my folks 1990 740GL stopped working yesterday. I took it out and attempted the first suggested repair method in the FAQ which is to reverse the polarity of the motor contacts. After a few tries I got the motor working again but now it does not pump any water. I've bench tested it and tested it on the car and there is no water coming out of it even though the motor is operating.
Is it possible the actual pumping bit (impeller?) has come off the motor? I attempted to get the pump body apart. It's a glued one so I tried the suggestions in the FAQ about using heat and a twisting motion on the cap. I only succeeded in breaking the plastic around the electrical contacts - the lid won't budge.
Can anyone suggest another strategy for getting it apart? I want to see if I can fix it before I go shopping for a replacement. Any help will be much appreciated.
