Choosing replacement parts

You're right, some parts aren't worth big money (the shock thing) and others are. There are a lot of decent quality aftermarket parts, and for parts like an air filter or spark plug wires, the difference between aftermarket and original equipment parts, may not be noticeable. The key is the quality of the parts.

one example is water pumps. I was buying HEPU pumps for a while for $37, which beat the Volvo wholesale by quite a lot. I never had, or saw a problem with one. So, that part went on the aftermarket list. Ditto for a lot of other high quality parts. Some I would never use, such as the Bosch black distributor caps... poor life span. Never much liked Bosch plugs either, but NGKs were great when I could get them. Some of it boils down to experience and anecdotal evidence, and there is quite a bit of good info on this board. Also, regardless of where you obtain parts, the important thing is that they are quality parts. Which means, you might get some good parts at Autozone, but others you may wish to get elsewhere. I used to 'stock' parts when I had a lot of Volvos, from a variety of places, anywhere from the closest farm supply store for Mobil 1 trans fluid and oil, to Wal Mart for wiper inserts, washer fluid, and Motorcraft oil filters, to wholesale sources in NV, and the normal online parts sources.
