Door handle hold on thingamajig. 200 1990

Ya know that thing you put the front door handle into when you're putting the panel back on? Ya know, ya stick the handle in at a certain angle and then turn it down and THEN put those silly TORX (gee I wish I was a phillips) screws in?
That funny shaped quater sized, spider shaped, piece of metal fell out as I was putting the handle back on last night. I put the panel back on with out it and things seem OK, but kinda flexy when I close the door.
What's the deal with those thingamajigs? How does it go in behind the door's sheet metal?
Perhaps I can live w/o it! Thoughts?
Thanks.
