95 940 - What is normal fan behavior? 900

I just got my 1995 940 and have driven about 150 miles. The coolant temp guage always shows normal (straight up) and the engine seems cool enough for summer. But I have never heard the fan come on unless the AC is running. I drive in suburban traffic - not stopped traffic. So does it seem right that in 95 degree weather that the engine is sufficiently cooled just by the the normal airflow of a moving car? Now I could be wrong - maybe I can't hear the fan. Also, I think that on some cars the fan will run briefly when the car is shut down. Maybe because of a surge of heat? Anyway, will this Volvo ever do that? Should I trust that coolant gauge?
