Strange stalling behavior 740 700 1990

My 740 has 172k miles on it and with a new timing belt, another problem has surfaced. While running nicely down the road the engine may "cough" ; that is it may go dead for a second and then keep going. For the duration of the cough the "check engine' light comes on. Some coughs turn to a full on stall. I switch into neutral and restart and keep going. Sometimes the cough is so frequent that the tachometer needle jumps up and down as the engine dies and runs again, the "check engine" light lighting up for each cough.
-With a half tank of gas, stepping hard on the brakes will stall it

-With a full tank or half, the car will stall with a sharp turn to the right.

-This problem is more likely to occur after 8 or 10 minutes run time

-OBD I diode light flashes that this is a air mass meter problem. That unit is four years old and the two Amm deaths that I have experienced were nothing like this. Fuel filter is four years old

-This problem is thought to have began after a run out of gas incident

Thanks for your thoughts
