new to the 240...electrical problem 200

Hello. First time poster on the brickboard. Long time member on Volvospeed with my c70. Just recently picked up a 1989 240 as a project/beater car. Just spent the last 3 weeks in my spear time replacing all the rear bushings, shocks and ball joints. I took her out for the madden voyage. On the way home it started to shutter and have 0 power then died. I would hook another battery up and let the car run for 2min then set off. After 1 mile the car would die again. That was fun for 4 miles home at 2am. I charged the battery and she starts now. So what should I look into? I dont really want this to happen again. Could something be discharging the battery? Maybe the alternator not working? Those are my 2 guesses. How should I go about testing for those 2 possibilities Thanks for any help. I hope to in time become a productive member of the board.
