960 burning oil 900 1995

My 1995 960 with 166,000 miles is burning a quart of oil every 1,500 miles or so and I'm wondering what I should do to keep it from getting worse fast. I am using Shaffer's or Valvoline 10 W 30 synthetic blend (recommended by my mechanics). Would it help to go to non-synthetic or all-synthetic oil or change the viscosity? Have any of you found an oil treatment of any kind that would help? Anything else I can do short of a major repair to keep the car running for a long time?

The car probably started burning a bit of oil at 140,000 to 150,000 miles. My mechanics who drive and specialize in Volvos were surprised to hear that the car is burning oil at this mileage.

Thanks!
